Good birding, Matt Brady Santa Cruz Today Matt Brady and I birded Loma Prieta. Among other things, such as singing Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers and California Thrashers, we had an adult female CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD. The bird was sitting on a brach about 30 feet into Santa Cruz county, but we watched it fly across the line to Santa Clara county also. The bird was at the intersection of Mt. Bache rd. and Mt. Madonna rd. It was a very small hummingbird, with an evenly and thinly steaked gorget (with no clusters of colored feathers in the center), and a very short, thin bill. It had a pale wash of buff on the sides, and a short tail with no red in it . It had a white spot behind the eye, and the small, white "comma" just in front of the eye. We viewed the bird from very closely, maybe 15 or 20 feet, and had very good looks at it while it was sitting on a branch. Ryan Terrill Santa Cruz __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
