I started from Stevens Creek CP on the trail between the ranger's station and Bay Tree Picnic Area. When you get past the spillway area the trail ascends. This trail ends and you have a choice of going left or right. Go left and the trail descends. The gnatcatchers were in the brush to the left where the trail first starts to level off. If you aren't very agile, return the way you came because the trail is rather steep in some places. Good birding, Peggy Don ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peggy Don" <[[email protected]]> To: "SBB" <[[email protected]]> Sent: Monday, March 15, 2004 8:18 PM Subject: [SBB] Stevens Creek CP SBBers: Hiking in Stevens Creek CP this afternoon, 03/15/04, for exercise but with my binouculars strapped on, I had to pause when I heard some buzzy sounds which I hadn't heard yet this year. Was it emanating from a bird? After a bit of hide-go-seek I located a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER. There were at least two calling. A few feet farther up the trail a CALIFORNIA THRASHER was singing lustily. I managed to find it on the backside of a bush in front of me before it finished its repertoire and flew off. Twenty yards farther up the trail 25 CALIFORNIA QUAIL were foraging before I scattered them as I moved on. What a refreshing pause it was!
