That's something that I didn't expect. They also take songbirds, small amphibians and reptiles, in addition to insects. Something else that I didn't know: Merlin are considered crepuscular and also prey on bats. A small part of a Merlin's diet is composed of small rodents and other vertebrates. They are also known to feed on dragonflies in fall migration.
