It was slow, hot birding for the Alum Rock Park SCVAS field trip today. The best bird of the day was seen from the parking lot. The male PHAINOPEPLA remains at the hillside above the Rusticlands parking lot. When we first saw him, he was flying and ended up almost over our heads. The white wing patches made for some pretty aerial displays. On the hillside, he perched showing off the glossy black body, red eyes, and of course the charming hairdo. A few people were fortunate enough to get a quick glimpse of a RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROW. A single WHITE-THROATED SWIFT winged quickly by the hillside. At the top of the Todd L. Quick trail, we saw RED-TAILED HAWK young from a very successful nest. At first we saw a juvenile perched a couple feet above a nest where a younger bird looked out. While we were watching, an even younger bird poked its head over the edge to watch us. This ones face was mostly white with bit of fluff still sticking here and there. Finally, yet another juvenile flew into the nest. Back in the valley, we came across a family of AMERICAN KESTRELS. While we were looking at a HUTTON'S VIREO, they all of a sudden got very agitated and called loudly and often. We couldn't figure out why until we saw a COOPER'S HAWK flush from a nearby tree.
