On Monday I checked the heron nests on the southeastern-most island at Lake Cunningham. Most of the Black-crowned Night Herons have fledged although 3 of the 13 nests are still active. 2 of the 3 Great Egret nests are still active w/ 3 chicks in each nest. It appears that 3 of the 4 "chicks" from the 3rd nest are still hanging around the island although I saw each of them flying while I was there. The GREG chicks in the nests are easy to see from the paved walkway that meanders around the lake. 1 Snowy Egret is incubating eggs and another may be starting a new nest, but only time will tell. I also saw a Green Heron, Foresters Terns, Pied-billed Grebe, Double-crested Cormorants, White Pelican, Mallards and Canadian Geese on the lake. Cliff and Barn Swallows are flying all around as well. The Burrowing Owl chicks (4) that Ted Gross reported on Cunningham Ave and Capital Expressway seem to be doing well. They are easy to see as well. Cheers!
