There were 8 immature Black-crowned Night Herons at the water's edge. Another was up in the palm tree (if that's what these trees are), behind fronds, while an adult perched nearby in the open. One of the pond-edge birds spread its wings and hopped up and down, as if it knew what it should do but hadn't quite got the hang of it yet. Up in the trees there were lots of egrets. One flapped and I could see its brownish underwings, which I take to be a sign of immaturity. The wonderful gargling noise coming from all around is so unexpected, it makes me laugh. This area is such a treat. Chris MacIntosh Menlo Park __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Friends. Fun. Try the all-new Yahoo!
