They love to almost bury themselves is the damp, loose earth. Papa quail is very watchful as the young explore the yard. The first group of at least 10 large young arrived a couple of weeks ago, and this morning two parent birds with four quite small young ones were seen. In spite of the presence of coyotes in the area this spring, the quail have done okay. They are beginning to come together in a large covey now. Thirty or more took flight when I disturbed them this morning. Also, the Hooded Orioles are busy feeding at the hummingbird feeder. The beautiful orange male has been drinking many times a day for the past three weeks. I also have a 1st summer male and the female at the feeder several times a day now. Is it possible the 1st year male is helping in the rearing of the young? Soon I expect to see the young Orioles brought to the feeder and taught how to feed there. They sure are funny while learning. An immature Spotted Towhee was checking out the area under the seed feeder this morning. Odd, since I haven't seen the adults all summer. Last month I had two juvenile Juncos.
