It was a brief visit, but well worth it. On the back side of the palm trees we saw 2 SNOWY EGRET nests, one containing 3 fluffy young ones, the other containing 2. There were 3 juvenile BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS in a nest in a nearby tree, and others flying overhead. On the pond side, there were a couple of GREAT EGRETS and loads of SNOWY EGRETS in the palms. I was surprised that there was so much activity in mid-July. In the shallow water across the trail behind the palms there was a WILLET in breeding plumage. I'd only seen the drab non-breeding Willets before, so that was exciting. It was foraging with a MARBLED GODWIT, a LONG-BILLED CURLEW, a couple of DOWITCHERS and BLACK-NECKED STILTS, and a bunch of AMERICAN AVOCETS. What a beautiful evening!
