I checked the marsh and ponds along the track to about 400 yds N of the EEC road. There I met Dean Manley (who spends more time in NCM than I do) coming from the north. We were rewarded with a Peregrine harassing shorebirds. It eventually landed on the tracks a few hundred yards further north. At 7PM I headed back toward the car. In the very first pond N of the road I saw the female Ruff which promptly flew to the north and farther out where I lost it. It was brown-backed, pure white below, with pink-orange legs, and not much larger than dowitchers. I may have seen this same bird briefly yesterday about the same time, way out in the marsh but, of course, it promptly flew out of sight. OK, enough ruffing it for this week.
