We tried to keep them away but when we got back from a recent trip there was a nest and one white egg in the plant. We decided to let things be. Later when I saw the female leave the nest (the fern) I checked and we now had three white eggs and a brown spotted egg. Being humans, and so interfering with nature, I removed the Brown-headed Cowbird egg. I probably should have let things be but I had no desire to have to subsequently pick up broken eggs or baby birds from my deck. A classic case of man over nature for the advantage of man.
