If you have an interest in these plans please check out the web site: www.southbayrestoration.org. The group that is collaborating on the restoration has made a determined effort in terms of public outreach, however, such plans rarely reach everyone. If you do not have time to involve yourself in these changes, then I will provide you with my (unapproved) interpretation of a two-stage process: 1. Many (most) salt ponds are being opened to the Bay through gates. These are not simple breaches, but some control is retained (which is costly). The purpose is to prevent any salt pond from getting so salty that it becomes hazardous waste and cannot be connected to the Bay as happened to the Napa salt ponds a dozen+ years ago. 2. Long range plans (5 to 50 years) are being put in place now, with extensive public comment (not just birders). My guess is that the salt ponds will decrease by 60% and there will be a return to extensive salt marsh. It is likely that salt pond dependent species will also decrease by 60%. If you approve or disapprove of any of these plans, then, by golly, involve yourself in the process and make your voice heard. Enough said.
