This morning, Saturday, January 31, I spotted the Ruff from the railroad 
tracks in New Chicago Marsh near the first pond, looking towards the corner of 
State and Spreckles.  As it worked its way past some dowitchers, I could see that 
it was significantly taller than they were.  (The bird's size listed in books 
includes the bill length, so a male Ruff's head should stand up higher.)  A 
few minutes later I spotted both Ruffs, feeding together in the Pickle Weed 50 
feet, or so, east of where the first had been.

Heading out the railroad tracks to the main line, I found a large number of 
Sanderlings spread throughout the impoundment area west of the railroad tracks; 
they were mixed in with many shorebirds, wading birds, and gulls.
