It has a minimal tuft consisting of a few short wispy feathers, some dusky mottling in the white flanks, and some worn brown tertials and coverts suggesting a first-winter bird on this date. It is possible that this is the same "tuftless" male that has been reported in Redwood Shores and Foster City (the bird is very similar to the one in Ron Thorn's 10 Dec 2003 description), although Ron felt his bird was likely an adult with retained basic plumage on that date, rather than a young bird. Also, I finally figured out why the bill of "the female" BARROW'S GOLDENEYE sometimes seems duller than others. There are two females (seen together today), the adult female with a bright orange bill (with some dark markings) and an immature female with a grayer cast to the orange and the immature wing pattern. Thanks Pat and Roland for quickly notifying us about this great find! (Seven birders had already enjoyed this bird before I left!).
