Steve Miller Subject: weekend birding - SLO Co. I guided a group from Santa Clara Valley Audubon over the weekend, but had nothing earthshaking. Coastally, on Saturday, we missed the Y-b Sapsucker at Cal Poly (I had it the previous Saturday, north of the library in pepper trees). We had the Laughing Gull at Oceano County Park (Pier Ave.)at lunch time with the other gulls and several G-t Grackles. The Ross' Goose was there also. We missed the White-winged Dove in Grover, but saw 2 Common Ground Doves on the ground at the edge of the citrus on Dana Foothill Rd. (left on Tefft off 101 and left on Dana)near 166 Dana Foothill. We went out to the Carrizo Plain on Sunday. We had a flock of Wild Turkeys along 58 on the way out, and at the Plain we had about 8 Ferruginous Hawks, 2 Burrowing Owls, 6 Prairie Falcons, a Golden Eagle, a Roadrunner, and over 100 Mt. Plovers (on both sides of Simmler Road (which runs north of Soda Lake Road about 1 mile north off the Carrizo Monument Education Center (Painted Rock) entrance road). Once on Simmler, the birds were on either side of the road in the open short grass fields near the tall water tank on the left side after you pass the lake. We also had a Sage Thrasher (Steve Miller)in a patch of scrub on Elkhorn just northwest of the intersection with Panorama (which leaves Soda Lake Road about 10 miles south of the education center),with a few Sage Sparrows, but could find no LeConte's. We did not see any Cranes, Rough-legged Hawks, or Merlins. By the way, my neighbor Nick had 14 Blue-winged Teal and 2 Eurasian Wigeon in the bay from the north end of Pecho Rd. in Los Osos on Sunday. He is a very capable birder from L.A. who stays here infrequently. Jim Royer Los Osos _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
