Sorry for the late post...Yesterday I went to check on Vasona's Great Blue Heron Colony and was so surprised to find that they have taken up resident on the island in the lake....one full adult, one second year and one yearling in the trees standing on nests, with two others fishing in the lake. Wonder how this will affect the Snowy and Great Egrets... Had 6 Black-crowned Night Herons and on the edges of the lake were 6 Snowy and 4 Great Egrets. Also, in the lake near the dam were 4 male Common Mergansers and 6 females...tons of Coots...an overexplosion of Rock Pigeons. Three Spotted Sandpipers with one chasing off the other.... 12 Killdeer and lots of Canada Geese but nothing special in the mix... I watched a beautiful Red-shouldered Hawk sitting up by the Dubios....and their Osprey "Baby" is back and I was able to take some nice pictures.... Then I went over to Oka Ponds...entered through Oka Lane....Three more Great Blue Herons (all adults). Green herons were low in numbers 2...as for ducks, Gadwalls, one pair of Hooded Mergansers, Lesser Scaup, Mallards, American Wigeons, Bufflehead and Ruddy Ducks.... The Osprey was chased from Vasona to the first Dell Avenue Pond were it sat on it's perch and then proceed to hunt the ponds. A Belted Kingfisher was hunting... A single Snipe on was snipe island and was easily seen without a scope... Happy Holiday and good birding.... My best regards, Linda Sullivan PS Pine Siskins (20) are still on my thistle socks.... _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
