After a half hour of not finding it (from the boathouse end of the lake), it appeared, swimming in the northeast corner, close to the boathouse, at about 9:05. I had fine views for several minutes. A bit later, while trying to relocate it with another birder, a cormorant which was likely this bird flew out from that corner (it may have been hidden by the pier) and across the lake, disappearing behind the island. I then headed over to Stevens Creek tidal marsh to try for Swamp Sparrow. It was windy, and there was little sparrow activity, but Bill Bousman (who arrived just after I did) stuck around longer and may have some better news. I heard two Virginia Rails calling, and Bill pointed out an adult Sora posing in the open. Also, a low-flying Merlin came close by.
