Between owling and daytime counting I walked nearly 13 miles...ouch! My best birds were all at Los Trancos Open Space Preserve (LTOSP). Along Lost Creek Trail I found an adult male HERMIT WARBLER in a mixed flock, 3 RED CROSSBILLS, and I heard a nearby PILEATED WOODPECKER. (I found 8 more CROSSBILLS at first light in some Douglas-firs along Skyline Blvd, 0.3 mile south of Page Mill Road.) I found two flocks of WILD TURKEYS -- 24 along the upper part of Trapper's Trail Fire Road at Foothills Park (FP), and 8 along Page Mill Trial in LTOSP. Single RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES were along Page Mill Road near address 4022, and along Lost Creek Trail in LTOSP. Two GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS and a NOR. PYGMY-OWL were along Los Trancos Creek at FP. AM. ROBINS have seemed well below par this season, but I was quite surprised to find only 4 (!) in a whole day of forest-dominated birding. It is not often that a tally of VARIED THRUSHES can eclipse that of Robins, but that was the case day with my 15 VARIEDS, all at LTOSP. A highlight for the day was extended views at close range of a male perched in the wide open in a bright gap in the forest along Franciscan Loop Trail. What a stunning bird! Too seldom do I get to oogle one at length, without forest shadows, twigs, foliage, and their furtive behavior dampening the show.
