After an unsuccessful search early Thursday morning, I headed up to Ed Levin Park early Friday morning (7:15). Around 7:45 a BARN OWL flushed from the pines at the end of the parking lot right in front of my face, and flew off to another pine southeast of the parking lot. I thought that would be the end of my morning owling. As I was heading around the northeast corner of the paved path, a tiny hawk zoomed in right in front of me and landed in a pine. The SHARP-SHINNED HAWK then began tearing apart breakfast. I glanced at the last pine in the line and saw in a dense area what I thought was the LONG-EARED OWL that had been reported earlier. Imagine my amazement when I looked through the binoculars and saw four owl eyes staring back at me. Two Long-eareds!! I went back up later around sunset with my mom, and after a brief dive bombing show of a COOPER'S HAWK by an AMERICAN KESTREL up on the hill beyond the playground area, we found one long-eared owl perched in the same pine he had been in early in the morning. The second (bigger) owl had been seen swooping into an oak by Kathy Parker. A few minutes later it buzzed right by mom and landed in another nearby pine. It was very exciting to get clear views of this owl, but I began to worry about the bird being disturbed by our gawking when it flushed out a third time as we were leaving. In answer to Steve's question, <> The park is posted "Closed at Sunset." There were no owl sounds early this morning, and maybe Sidd (who was there as we were leaving just after sunset) could comment on whether a ranger came to chase him out, or whether the owls started to call as dusk fell.
