While buying another book on Amazon.com, "Dictionary of Birds of the United States" came up, so I bought it. It is by Joel Ellis Holloway, and is $13.97. The previous dictionary was published in 1985 by a different author; this one was published in 2003. Example: Accipiter cooperii Cooper's Hawk SCIENTIFIC NAME. Accipiter, general Latin name for a bird of prey, especially a hawk + cooperii, for William C. Cooper (1798-1864), an American zoologist, collector, conchologist, and one of the founders of the New York Lyceum of Natural History. COMMON NAME: Cooper's, see scientific name.
