Grayson's story and paintings are not well known and this exhibit provides an excellent introduction to his work. Next spring, Phil Gordon will present a SCVAS program on Grayson and that will also allow us to know the guy better. Briefly, inspired by Audubon's folio of "Birds of America" he decided to "complete" Audubon's work by painting all west coast birds unknown by Audubon. I believe he eventually made 164 or so paintings, including life histories, and 156 are extant at the Bancroft Library. Lois Stone wrote a biography which was published with prints of the 156 paintings at full size and this is accessible to anyone who wishes to visit Stanford's Special Collections Library. However, you do need to schedule your visit a day ahead. Otherwise you may be able to find the book/prints in the fine arts used book market for circa $4500+. Some say that Grayson was a better painter than Audubon. I think it is a toss-up. Some of Grayson's paintings are really good for the time. A collection of some of Robert Batemen's prints is also included, which shows the amazing skill of modern bird painters. The exhibit runs until 29 Aug, Wednesday through Sunday, 9 to 5. The exhibit is in the Officer's Mess at 50 Moraga in the Presidio (there is a visitor's center here as well). I found it took a very comfortable hour plus. Afterwards you can visit the Crissy Field Marsh which is two minutes away and augment your San Francisco County list. Bill P.S.: There are some lovely slides of birds of the Presidio that run continuously. Can you find a misidentification? _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
