This is an unusually high number for this reservoir. I know Mike Mammoser recorded over 50 CATE at Calaveras Reservoir, another inland reservoir, earlier. Other sightings from the upper end: 82 CANADA GEESE were seen today as their numbers begin to increase at this reservoir. This morning I watched them streaming in from the east over Bailey Road. Besides all the Mallards, 34 GADWALL were seen today. Also of interest was a basic-plumaged GREEN-WINGED TEAL - first of the season for me. The upper end of Calero Reservoir can be a good place to look for wintering geese, ducks, and shorebirds; however, it is advisable to bring a scope because the mudflats are now quite extensive. To reach this area, drive one mile past the Calero Reservoir boat ramp on McKean Rd and then turn right into Calero County Park. Park in the dirt parking area near the ranger office and then walk the road until you reach a gate for the levee trail. Go around the gate uphill which takes you to the levee trail. Good birding - Ann Verdi _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
