The biggest surprise was two flocks of BROWN PELICANS, both seen at the same time. One flock was between 1000 and 2000 feet over the valley, which is quite unusual, and contained 47 immatures. The other flock was of nine birds and was at a more typical altitude of 50 feet and were also immatures or sub-adults. Thus birds in the air at one time were 56, plus a number of birds were seen foraging or roosting in other locations during the morning. Steve said there has been some discussion of the excellent productivity of Brown Pelicans this year with a concordant spread of immatures looking for areas to feed. We checked the New Chicago Marsh without finding any of the uncommon shorebirds found there lately.
