On July 27-29 I was at Portola Redwoods State Park and environs in southern San Mateo Co., "just over the ridge" from Patty. I encountered a couple dozen junco families, many of which (10+) had begging juveniles that looked fairly recently fledged. Some brief stops aIong Skyline Blvd on the SCL/SM border also produced a few families with begging juveniles. I can't speak exactly for the Santa Clara data set, but in general atlas data collection peaks well before the end of July and has slowed substantially by the end of July. So often the extremes of the nesting season may not be adequately represented in the atlas data.
