"HV" is Hidden Villa. 4/12 Male Pileated Woodpecker observed crossing from uppermost Stevens Creek drainage over Page Mill Rd. into upper Los Trancos Cr. drainage. Mountain Quail heard calling from upper east-facing slopes of Black Mtn. Otherwise a trip to Black Mtn. was pretty boring, with the only noteworthy migrants being 5 singing Black-throated Gray Warblers, 4 Wilson's Warblers, and 5 Black-headed Grosbeaks. 4/18 Pileated Woodpecker calling repeatedly in upper Los Trancos Creek (Los Trancos OSP near Gate LT-O1) in general area where David Suddjian found PIWOs on Palo Alto CBC. Heard a few yards into San Mateo County but plenty of fresh sign on SCL side of the line. Also on the SCL side were several each of Black-throated Gray Warblers, Warbling Vireos, Lazuli Buntings, Pacific-slope Flycatchers, and Black-headed Grosbeaks. Pacific Giant Salamander larvae in upper LT Creek. 4/19 Just below the dam at Stevens Creek County Park, a Yellow Warbler singing; N. Rough-winged Swallows investigating holes in the eroded bluff adjacent to the dam, several Vaux's Swifts overhead. 4/21 Two Cassin's Vireos at HV in Big House area. 4/23 Hermit Warbler male in oak trees at HV (silent). Pair adult Golden Eagles over farm at noon; at least one passed over 5PM. 4/24 Cassin's Vireo, Black-throated Gray Warbler at Byrne Preserve in Los Altos Hills 5PM. 4/27 Western Tanager began singing at HV - may be local breeder returning, we can hope despite nest failure last year. My 70+ nestboxes are very busy - will post a progress report soon. --Garth Harwood _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
