Enroute, we stopped at Grant Lake, where Lisa spotted the first of many groups of northward VAUX'S SWIFTs that we saw today. There were about 8 birds. We saw another 3 or 4 small groups moving north over the lake. Up the road a bit, we saw a large dispersed flock over Hall's Valley moving toward the lake. I guessed that there was about 30 birds visible in that group. At Smith Creek, we continued to see a few more small groups moving north. So, it was apparent that there was a sizeable movement occuring today. Our sighting would be in line with Randy Little's sighting at Sierra Rd. Did anyone see them over the Santa Clara Valley floor today? Other highlights: Seen on the way up from Grant Lake: - GRASSHOPPER SPARROWs, at least two, .25 mi. up the road from Grant Lake - LAZULI BUNTINGs, numerous - a flock of approx. 25 TRICOLORED BLACKBIRDs heading toward the lake At Smith Creek: - HERMIT, NASHVILLE, BLACK-THROATED GRAY, WILSON'S WARBLERS in the trees over the creek where it crosses the trail - A probable HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHER. A grayish throat was the only feature I could make out as it remained distant and moved often enough to make it impossible to get in the scope. It was not calling. - BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKs were abundant and singing Grant County Park: - 8 WILD TURKEYs in separate groups, including at least two turkeylets - SHARP-SHINNED, COOPER'S, RED-SHOULDERED, and RED-TAILED HAWKs - a Bobcat - 3 feral pigs (at the Lake) I forgot to check the heron rookery.
