At the ranch, we spotted a very visible Barn Owl in - you guessed it - the barn! We got excellent views of him. The highlight of the day, however, was at the Chestnut Picnic Grounds in Stevens Creek Park. We were standing in the orchard area looking back at the bathrooms when Kay pointed out three "huge pine cones" in the leftmost of two leaning Monterey (?) Pines on the bank to our left. She had spotted an adult Great Horned Owl sitting on a branch somewhat perpendicular to the trunk of that leaning tree, and beside this owl was a fluffy fledgling. Yet another fluffball sat on the branch immediately above these two. The adult watched us for a while and then proceded to preen, while the babies sat still, their silhouettes looking like giant pine cones, and their feathers blowing in the breeze...what a sight!
