A Red shouldered Hawk flew to its nest in a Palm tree across from the parking lot. Two Hooded Orioles also seemed interested in the palm. A male Allen's Hummingbird perched and gave us prolonged views on our steep climb up the switchback trail. Four Horned Larks seen further up the trail near the ridge They sat on the rock wall for several minutes giving us time to study their colorful pattern. We were really lucky when two Grasshopper Sparrows perched on a rock long enough to ID. Barn Swallows and Violet Green Swallows were sighted, as were three Red tailed Hawks. Several White tailed Kites were kiting as was one of three Am. Kestrels seen. Two Ash throated Flycatchers were on the Fortini part of the loop as well as several noisy Wrentits. This is where we saw our only Rufous crowned Sparrows. Five W. Kingbirds were perched on the wires along the trail back to the parking lot and two Savannah Sparrows perched on the fence. Conspicuously absent were W. Bluebirds and Cal.Thrashers. We saw an adult Golden Eagle on its nest at Mc Kean and Schillingsburg, but couldn't see the chicks with our binoculars. The Black Sage and most wildflowers were pretty but past their prime. Purple Chinese Houses were just starting to bloom along the creek.
