No luck. I did not have a scope and you definitely need a scope! You also need membership to SFBBO.org and the combination to the CCFS gate! From the last parking lot we took the North Rim Trail southwest until we were about 100 feet past where the paved road doubles back on itself. The RUHU was on the hillside above the trail. We then decided to check out the slag ponds visible from the Coyote Creek Field Station access road. Almost the first bird we saw, at about 11:15 AM, was a BLACK-HEADED GULL. This gull was feeding near two BONAPARTE'S GULLS (the Gulls would walk in-place and feed on material brought to the surface by this action). The Gulls were in the first slag pond west of the first slag pond visible as you drive in to the Coyote Creek Field Station from southern gate. The BHGU was obviously larger than the BOGU, it stood taller, had dark red legs, a longer and heavier dark red bill (under certain lighting conditions, black at other times), it had a partial blackish hood (the black back of the hood looked well defined whereas the forehead and the base of the bill was mostly white), we also noted that the back portion of the hood stopped higher up on the back of the head than that of the BOGU (those with hoods) , a whitish split eyering was sometimes evident, and the mantle and wings of the feeding bird were essentially the same color as the that on the BOGU (the lower neck being white on the BHGU, light gray on the BOGU). Twice during our observations (once after Mike Rogers showed up) the bird flew a short distance showing an all white tail and most importantly the dark lower primaries. At various times the BHGU was quite aggressive toward nearby BOGUs. Mike was still viewing the bird when we left shortly after one o'clock. A quick stop in Alviso failed to produce the Ruffs.
