(not a 4/1 joke) X-BeenThere: [[email protected]] X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5b1 Precedence: list List-Id: South Bay Birding List-Unsubscribe: , List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Sender: south-bay-birds-bounces+south-bay-birds-archive=[[email protected]] Errors-To: south-bay-birds-bounces+south-bay-birds-archive=[[email protected]] With the end of the hockey season on us, I want to send this out before we lose too many of the folks who unsubscribe when the hockey finishes for their teams.... My prior 4/1 note to the hockey lists notwithstanding (most of you figured that one our pretty quickly), there are, in fact, upcoming changes coming here at Plaidworks, and I want to let everyone know what's going to be happening. Laurie and I been in the planning stages of a number of changes for a few months. A key one is that in December, we made the decision to shut down the consulting business we've maintained, and we decided to cut the number of things we're involved in because we've decided to try to find more time for our own lives individually and as a couple. We have, since the dark ages of the Internet, donated time, energy, resources, hosting space, and whatever else we felt we could to things we felt deserved some help, so there have always been groups using our servers we've felt responsible to for reliability and uptime, and a commitment to the folks on our mailing lists that stuff should "just work" and work right. We've been working with those groups since last fall to find other places to live; most already have migrated, the last few are working on it now. When this is complete, the only things living on our server will be "our" stuff, so we can be less worried about the server status and uptime. We don't plan on changing the "just works" aspect (and in fact, we hope to make significant improvements in the next couple of months), but it'll allow us to not feel responsible as a hosting company any longer. We've also made a decision to cut back on the number of the mailing lists we're planning to support. This hasn't been an easy decision, and it'll likely upset some people, but we want to focus more on the lists we feel have strong and viable communities and that tie in with our personal interests as groups we want to be involved with. Some of the lists have lost critical mass and don't seem to be able to maintain conversations, and in those, we feel it's better to encourage users to find another community that does. We hope doing this will allow us to focus on attracting new users to those lists we do maintain. Here is the set of mailing lists we currently manage, and our decision on what to do with it: bhawks-l: keep habs: keep maple-leafs: keep sharks: keep south-bay-birds: keep women-in-hockey: keep ahl: discontinue cal-flames: discontinue col-avalanche: discontinue oak-athletics: discontinue online-drive: discontinue ott-senators: discontinue pit-penguins: discontinue All lists will be kept live for two weeks after the team finishes their season. The oak-athletic and online-drive lists were warned last fall, and we'll keep them live until June 1. For AHL, we'll keep it live through the playoffs. Friday, my Xserve arrived, so I can start serious development on the new server. I expect to have everything done by mid-June. One of the user-visible changes you'll see is the mailing lists will migrate from plaidworks.com to plaidworks.org -- but we'll be maintaining the old addresses indefinitely as well, but I want the new site to represent our new, non-commericial/personal orientation. there will likely be other changes, as they become defined I'll explain them to the groups affected. I appreciate everyone's patience and understanding as we undertake this upgrade; my hope is that it'll create a better environment for all of us for the next few years (so I won't have to make this significant a change again for a while!), and also allow Laurie and I to step back a bit and be a bit less active in supporting other people's things to give us more time for our own. As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to drop me a note. chuq Plaidworks _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
