Today was my day for looking for nesting birds....and boy did I have a blast. I started out at Palo Alto Baylands where a Black-crowned Night Heron was sitting on a nest, and two Snowy Egrets were standing on nests. Rough count on the Snowys would be 15 and Black-crowned Night Herons 6 (these are birds not nests). I drove out to the boat dock area and there is a Raven in the nest on the power tower. While at the PA Baylands I checked out the mudflats to find 20+ Bonaparte's Gulls (some with Black heads) and a few hundred Marbled Godwits, Dowitchers, Long-billed Curlews, and Whimbrils. On the boardwalk I found an egg that looks like a Snowy Egret's egg. I took pictures of it...it was cracked open.... >From there I went out to Calero and got my first of the season Caspain Tern. On the way back I stopped and watched the Golden Eagle on the power tower. I stood there for 35 minutes and a white fluffy chick came up to the parents bill. I was able to take pictures but there are so far away. You can see the chick in the picture...to cool! >From there I went La Foret but it was very quiet as was Guadalupe Oak Grove Park. Stopped by Vasona to check on the GBHE Colony....todate I have collected 6 egg shells.... One on 3/30 at 8 in the morning, I was walking around looking for egg shells when one came down from the trees. Today I heard little herons calling...now it should get exciting. 5 nests with eggs/babies and one new nest laying eggs. Okay, wishing you all good birding and my best regards, Linda Sullivan _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
