No such luck :-( We then made a fairly quick check of the eucalyptus trees on San Felipe Rd. The only "notable" bird seen was a RED-TAILED HAWK sitting on a nest near the top of the middle tree (we really didn't expect to find anything). Our next destination was Llagas Creek north of Bloomfield Road. Ducks in the "slag ponds" included lots of MALLARD, GADWALL, AMERICAN WIGEON, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, and RUDDY DUCK, lots of mostly male CINNAMON TEAL, several NORTHERN SHOVELER, several NORTHERN PINTAIL, three to four pair of RING-NECKED DUCK, four adult male BLUE-WINGED TEAL (plus at least one female), and one adult female COMMON GOLDENEYE. Shorebirds included 30-40 Dowitcher, a half dozen GREATER YELLOWLEGS, and a couple LEAST SANDPIPERS (as well as BLACK-NECKED STILTS and AMERICAN AVOCETS). As we were leaving we heard a fairly loud three note call coming from the creek, near the sixth "slag pond" dike heading west from the main creek dike, count as you head north from Bloomfield Road. This call was repeated three to four times only to be interrupted when a water district truck stopped nearby. It's awfully early in the season but it would seem that the call had to be coming from a Yellow-breasted Chat. Unfortunately this was an abbreviated song and the bird was not found.
