A later attempt to refind it yielded a male WOOD DUCK. A YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER in the willows was the first of the year for many. I bright BEWICK'S WREN chided us from those same willows. YELLOW WARBLERS were as thick as gnats. I think I breathed one in by mistake. :-) Just kidding. Still true that they were thick on the ground. By the end of the morning, it was hard to resist saying, "Oh, just another Yellow Warbler." Some were still quite bright yellow. Little ornaments hanging off the fennel. Also in the fennel were an AMERICAN GOLDFINCH and a CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE. A few WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS were evident as well. A few people caught sight of a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT briefly in the fennel with two Yellow Warblers. A NUTTALL'S called from high in a tree but took off before anyone really got a look. A couple sightings of Downy/Hairy Woodpeckers but never long enough to positively identify. CALIFORNIA QUAIL called from the streamside and a MARSH WREN sounded off in the reeds. A WHITE-TAILED KITE flew along the embankment. Looking over the next pond, BARN SWALLOWS did a few flybys. As did a flock of 4 GREAT EGRETS. And a couple GREAT BLUE HERONS. And a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON. Oh, and a SNOWY EGRET. A good vantage point for herons and egrets I guess. A male BELTED KINGFISHER flew along the side of the pond to the right of us and was kind enough to land for a few minutes in full view. A couple BLACK PHOEBES kept him company. A herd of BUSHTITS made there way among the bushes alongside us passing by a SONG SPARROW. Out on the pond, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS and AMERICAN COOTS predominated. A lone SCAUP appeared to be a Greater. A couple COMMON MOORHEN moved in an out of the reeds on the left side. This same area on the return loop yielded a couple of COMMON MERGANSERS standing on a small sandbar. In the distance, a RED-TAILED HAWK circled over the fields and a TURKEY VULTURE was sunning on a telephone pole. As we walked along the side of the pond, a COOPER'S HAWK zoomed by directly overhead. And, at the far corner, a beauteous RED-SHOULDERED HAWK flew by within 50 feet of the group. Coming back to the cars and heading toward the model airplane park, it became obvious how much bulldozing has been going on there. It looks like they are making room for picnic tables and such. The area around the Bittern Pond has been devastated. The "path" where we used to walk along the side has been bulldozed flat and wide and the side graded. Looks like they are preparing to put in a road of some kind. Not surprisingly, no sign of Bittern detected. Sadly, I think we can consider this a former Bittern site. On the plus side for that pond, we did pick up a number of RING-NECKED DUCKS (2 male, 5 female), a single male RUDDY DUCK (still mostly breeding plumaged), and a number of still quite young PIED-BILLED GREBES and AMERICAN COOTS. A splendid GREEN HERON stood by the side the ponds in the open and in full sunlight, showing off I'm sure. Gorgeous creature. Its back was all gilt-edged hunter green with a russet neck stretched for optimum display. This was our 3rd or 4th Green Heron for the day. An AMERICAN KESTREL on the Osprey tree was our final raptor sighting for the day. Best Regards, Kirsten R.
