A short way into the New Almaden trail I played my tape of the W. Screech Owl. Suddenly a Great Horned owl flew over us and landed in a nearby tree. We watched it for a while, then walked back towards the main trail in an open area and played the Common Poorwill call. Several answered from afar at different locations, one was quite close. Two bat species flew overhead, and we saw two tarantulas on the trail. On a tree lined part of the trail, I played the W.Screech Owl tape again and four nearby W.Screech Owls owls answered. Some swooped low over our heads. With no flashlight we made our way out of the park by 8:45 pm, just as the harvest moon was rising over the mountains.
