Your field guides are now wrong! (I knew all along it was a pigeon.) Nancy Teater ------------------------------- Many changes were made last week by the American Ornithologists' Union. Amongst those important for North American Birders: * Rock Dove is now called Rock Pigeon. Labeled 'fairly common' on The Sea Ranch bird list, I rarely see this species on the ocean bluff. * Band-tailed Gull is now called Belcher's Gull. * The American Three-toed Woodpecker has been split from the Eurasian Three-toed Woodpecker. (People who keep a Life List call this a two-for!) * The Hispanolian Crossbill found in Haiti and the Dominican Republic has been split from the White-winged Crossbill. * Snowy Owl genus has been changed to Bubo. * Other genus changes involve Doves and Owls. And the biggest surprise of all... Ducks, Geese and Swans, as well as Quails and Grouse are moved AHEAD of Loons in the taxonomic list! All of your North American Field Guides are now wrong. Get out the scissors and tape! Enjoy Winged Migration; the one going on about us, as well as the wonderful and beautiful documentary returning to Arena Theater tomorrow night.
