Today, I made the round of the shoreline locations in Mountain View and Palo Alto. At the La Avenida Trailhead entrance to the Stevens Creek Trail, I found a cockateel-type bird who flew in to a power tower. With the help of my scope and camera, I was able to get close-up views and pictures (see http://community.webshots.com/user/birdermom). An odd situation aroused my curiosity. The bird (which is not listed in any of my bird books, but which looks similar to a bird a roommate of mine had about 17 years ago) has a leg band! Why would an escaped bird have a leg band? Is this a species that is being studied to determine if it has "naturalized"? Any answers (including species and sources for further research) are appreciated. Thanks!
