All,

I couldn't help but note today that there were many large rafts of Northern 
Shovelers that swam in circles, each duck apparently feeding upon material 
being brought to the surface by the swimming motion of the ducks ahead of it.  It 
would be interesting to compare the swirling, uplifting action of these ducks 
with that which allows Phalaropes to bring food to the surface through there 
own actions.  Both actions must concentrate the food at the surface and in the 
path of the bird [rather than just simply agitating the food in a random 
manner].
