Red-shouldered Hawks have thinner crescents in the primaries. Did the broadly-striped tail appear to be a contrasting black and white (Red-shouldered) or a lower contrast brown and black (imm. Red-tailed)? Did you happen to note the relative widths of the bands in the tail? A Red-tailed Hawk doesn't necessarily have dark underwing linings (the dark and rufous morphs do); they do have dark leading edges on the undersides of the wing (patagium), visible on the light morphs.
