The birding highlights at the lake included a flock of about 30 AMERICAN WIGEON, a flock of about 20 GADWALL, and about a dozen MALLARDS. A smart place for ducks, as Saturday was the opening day of the first session of the duck hunting season. We also enjoyed views of an adult OSPREY which sat on a branch about 2 feet above the water for about 15 minutes. A DOUBLE CRESTED CORMORANT sat on another branch about a foot below the Osprey. A lone adult GREAT BLUE HERON was spotted in some reeds at one corner of the lake. We had the trail and lake to ourselves until the park ranger came along. He told us that the Osprey and the Heron often get territorial about who has fishing rights on the lake usually in the early morning or early evening.
