Birds of note: - Peregrine Falcon at Alviso on the towers along the entrance road. - 6 Lesser Yellowlegs, 1 Greater Yellowlegs in the areas checked at New Chicago Marsh. - The view from the base of the Charleston Slough trail was quite spectacular with many skeins of American White Pelicans streaming over from Pond A1 to the Flood Control Basin (FCB). - 8+ of the dozen Blue-winged Teal reported earlier by Gordon Barrett roosted in the FCB near Adobe Creek. - A juvenile White-tailed Kite with very striking plumage occupied the kite perch in the FCB. - Two late Barn Swallows flew over the forebay. - A Peregrine Falcon was spotted by Lisa Myers at the Baylands. - One Clapper Rail foraged in the channel bottom at "Rail Alley" along the Baylands' boardwalk. Also saw Northern Harrier, White-tailed Kite, Cooper's Hawk, Red- shouldered Hawk and Red-tailed Hawk at Alviso, a good selection of raptors. At Alviso, we only walked as far as the 1st pond on the east side of the RR tracks (and did not see the Stilt Sandpiper seen by Al Eisner today), and part way down the entrance road. A stop at the Sunnyvale Water Treatment Plant was scrubbed because of the traffic from the hazardous waste recycling program, and the lack of parking because of the duck hunters and other levee users. [Duck hunting season started yesterday.] Charleston Slough was at high tide with few bird species present (no skimmers), at least near the forebay. Shoreline's Sailing Lake was fairly low on activity. The Baylands had a lot of shorebird activity on the mudflats in the old yacht harbor. In the mid-afternoon, we made a short visit to the "Stierlin Marsh" to try for the waterthrush. For a lush, apparently food-rich location, it was very quiet. Dipped on the waterthrush.
