Although out of the county, Amy and I had Pinyon Jays on two backcountry trips to the Sierra Nevada over the last month, including one bird well over the crest and down into the west side of the range. We have no personal records for this species on any previous backpacking trips we have taken in the Sierra. We are several years into a significant and serious drought occurring over much of the southwest (Lake Powell is at is lowest point since it was filled in the early sixties). Apparently the pinyon nut crops have been meager to absent this year and thus the birds are probably scattering widely.
