This morning around 5:45a, a WESTERN SCREECH-OWL did a fast
series of barking calls that blended into its trill. This came from the 
live
oaks in front of our home along Skyline Blvd. across from Long Ridge
Open Space Preserve.

This evening around 8:00p, my wife called me outside to hear a
NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL tooting from nearby doug firs. A GREAT
HORNED OWL called in the background. I grabbed my Billy Kidd Stetson
(thanks to John Mariani for the head gear tip), returned outside, and 
gave
a few mimicking toots. Soon, a saw-whet gave a couple of its drawn out
semi-screech calls from close by. It's a very aggressive sound compared
to the tooting. I wimped out and stepped back inside, not wanting to 
have
an angry owl diving at my face.
