This came from the live oaks in front of our home along Skyline Blvd. across from Long Ridge Open Space Preserve. This evening around 8:00p, my wife called me outside to hear a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL tooting from nearby doug firs. A GREAT HORNED OWL called in the background. I grabbed my Billy Kidd Stetson (thanks to John Mariani for the head gear tip), returned outside, and gave a few mimicking toots. Soon, a saw-whet gave a couple of its drawn out semi-screech calls from close by. It's a very aggressive sound compared to the tooting. I wimped out and stepped back inside, not wanting to have an angry owl diving at my face.
