We saw two LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES, one near the observation platform and one in the climbing area. One is usual for the park but the addition of a second bird is nice. A female AMERICAN KESTREL was hunting near the south end of the main trail. And neaby, a SAY'S PHOEBE was flycatching from the fence. We watched a beautiful flock of AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS kettling and slowly moving southeast. I counted the birds to between 60 and 70 individuals. These birds alone were worth the price of admission. I have one question. On October 9, I counted 47 MOURNING DOVES in an area of the park near the ball fields. The usual number of Mourning Doves seen averages about three. Would this large flock be migrating or did I witness a Dove convention?
