Yes, that is a long shot, and no, I came across no Pinyon Jays. I drove from my home in Livermore south along Mines Road into Santa Clara County listening for Pinyon Jays calls, and the only calls I heard were from Western Scrub-jays and Yellow-billed Magpies. I reached the "Junction" at about 4 PM where I was surprised at what I saw. The "Junction Store" was still there. but everything across the road to the west from the fire station to tops of the hills to the west and 1.6 miles south to the bridge where there had been a Great-Blue Heron Rookery. Time will tell how serious the burn was and how well things will grow back. This was all the result of one of the several lightning fires started on 25 August 2003. I had not heard any mention of this over SBB. So, I thought I would post this as many birders had posted their sightings of Lewis's Woodpeckers and of nesting Great Blue Herons from here. -- Mike Feighner, Livermore, CA, Alameda County _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
