Full notice is given below. Commiserating over the fates of the A's and Giants an added "bonus"... - Jennifer details below ---------- From: jennifer rycenga <[[email protected]]> Date: Fri, 26 Sep 2003 10:02:02 -0700 To: <[[email protected]]> Subject: [SBB] Big SIT! at Palo Alto Baylands, Sunday October 12 Dear South Bay Birders: For the third year in a row, I am organizing a team for the Big SIT! For those of you unfamiliar with this ultra-wacky event, the Big SIT! is an annual international birding event, in which people sit (for as long as they can) in a pre-selected circle of 17.5 feet in diameter, and observe as many bird species as possible from within that circle. This is best done with a team of observers, so that we can trade off times with each other. My chosen Bay Area location is the end of the boardwalk at the Palo Alto Baylands. As members of this list know, this area has potential for a high species count - rails, Short-eared Owls, Peregrine Falcons and Merlins, among others, with a few habitats in sight. Plus, there is a kind of enlarged viewing platform at the end of the boardwalk, which means we have two benches, and wooden railing, to help us through the day. My partner Peggy Macres, and I will be there from daybreak on (if not before then!) to nightfall (we really want to get the Short-eared Owl this time). The rule is that any bird seen or heard from within the 17 1/2 foot circle can count. The platform at the end of the boardwalk is entirely within these dimensions. In previous years I have tallied around 50+ species, which was due to being a small group, and my still rather decidedly intermediate birding skills. It would be great to have more eyes, ears and skills there, and inch toward the 70 mark (which seems possible to me) This year the Big SIT! is planned for Sunday October 12th. Please get back to me if you want to meet us out there - whether for the bulk of the day (bring sunscreen) or even if you only have an hour or two. Please bring a scope if you have one. I like this event because you can be social with other birders without scaring off the birds. You can watch the changing behaviors of birds through the day and the cycle of the tides. It is also an opportunity to be a goodwill ambassador for birding! And for those of you who, like Peggy and me, are eager for the postseason success of the Giants and the A's, we will have a radio or two with us! Hope many of you are able to join this eccentric adventure. If you want more information on the Big SIT! (which really is fun), or to form your own circle, check out their website .
