Our focus is on South Santa Clara County ranging from the Diablo Foothills to the Santa Cruz Mountains and includes both Coyote Valley along the Coyote Creek riparian corridor and Almaden Valley with its reservoirs and woodlands. Local "hot spots" include Calero Reservoir, Ogier Ponds, and Almaden Lake. For those who would like a bit of a hiking challenge, we also get up into the hills - Santa Teresa CP, Almaden/Quicksilver CP, Mt Umunhum (Sierra Azul), and Coyote Ridge (a special CNPS holding east of Hwy 101 near Anderson Reservoir). Special birds found on previous counts have included Pacific Loon, Barrow's Goldeneye, Bald Eagle, Lewis's Woodpecker, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, American Dipper, Mountain Bluebird, Hermit Warbler, and Great-tailed Grackle. We welcome your participation in documenting wintering birds in the varied, yet often under-birded, habitats of this count circle - and perhaps discover a rarity along the way. As always, the count goes on rain or shine, and there is a $5.00 participation fee (which goes back to National Audubon). Also, I'm happy to tell you that John Mariani, our original compiler, will be in town for the count, and the countdown dinner will be held again at his folks' house in Almaden Valley. I'm really glad that John will be able to be with us - and besides, he knows all the good owling places around here. For more information and/or to sign up for the count, please contact me at [[email protected]] Ann Verdi, Compiler Calero-Morgan Hill CBC _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
