My mom and I drove up to Skyline Ridge Open Space Preserve this morning. (Yes, we both drove--me behind the wheel and she from the back seat.) As we were walking up the hill on the northwest side of Alpine Pond, we thought we saw a crow flying into a dead pine. Upon closer look, we discovered we had found the Lewis's Woodpecker that we had read about here on SBB! In fact, we found a total of four LEWO's, all on the dead trees right along Alpine road just west of Skyline. At one point an American Kestral flew in and perched on a branch, but neither the woodpeckers--Lewis's and Acorn--nor the omnipresent jays--mostly Scrub, with a few Stellar's--were were fazed. (Guess they all figured he wouldn't pick on someone his own size.) A quick thanks to everyone for such a warm welcome here at SBB and on the bird walks I've been on so far!
