Hamilton. Driving up Arroyo Mocho a GREATER ROADRUNNER crossed the road at M.P. 9. There was a heavy frost on the grasses and some of the chaparral plants. At my start at the county line, it was 26 deg, which wasn't too bad, but the wind picked up for most of the morning which kept it quite cold. At the Colorado Creek culvert on Mines Road, I found three GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS working the foothill pines. These are montane or northern birds, not our Santa Cruz Mountain residents. In the wet meadow and pond across from the Digger Pine Ranch I found two HOUSE WRENS. Single birds have apparently wintered at this location occasionally in the past. Almost as surprising were five LINCOLN'S SPARROWS in one bush, responding to pishing. In San Antonio Valley there was an adult FERRUGINOUS HAWK at the dogleg near San Antonio Creek. With patience I counted at least five LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS in the last grove of valley oaks before the road turns west toward Mt. Hamilton. This is the same place birds were found earlier in the fall. Just east of the summit I counted another five birds. These are likely wintering birds, as found previously here in early October. Driving back home, I made a brief stop at Grant Lake. An imm. SNOW GOOSE was grazing along the eastern side. In the lake were three female/immature HOODED MERGANSERS. Bill _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
