About a dozen Nutmeg Mannikins were feeding on ripe berries south of the Mazzone bridge. A Yellow shafted N. Flicker flew from the Mazzone property to an oak tree across the trail, and gave us great looks at his bright yellow underwings. We found a Hairy Woodpecker from his loud pick- pick call. We were thrilled to find a pair of Western Tanagers near the equestrian trail. The male didn't have any noticeable red color, but was quite a bit brighter than the female. We got good looks at their dark wings, large eye and large yellowish bill two separate times. We found a pair of Hooded Mergansers where I saw two pair last friday. This was on the creek, across from last house on Pheiffer Ranch Road. A flock of American Goldfinch and a Townsends Warbler were seen in the tree tops near the Camden bridge. On the way back we looked for the Mergansers from a different vantage point and saw the Wood Ducks we missed walking south. They were just opposite from the Mergansers, two males and a female. I believe these are the same three Wood Ducks that have been seen on the creek for nearly a year now.
