I checked again this afternoon and the snake was still there. I now feel sure this must be the work of the LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, but that leaves me with several questions. Do Shrikes spread their saved items over their entire territory or pick one spot and use it over and over? How long would the Shrike be likely to leave something like this small snake? Is this behavior believed to indicate a shortage of available prey? Birds in the park today included three GREATER YELLOWLEGS, a male NORTHERN HARRIER, a RED-TAILED HAWK, a few WESTERN MEADOWLARKS, a SAY'S PHOEBE and a female AMERICAN KESTREL. The only birds in the pond were MALLARDS and AMERICAN COOTS. Rosalie Strait _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
