Stimulated by Mike Roger's report of Red Phalaropes in Alviso, I headed out to the Alviso yacht harbor Saturday, 11/1/03. At around noon I found a group of 6 RED PHALAROPEs foraging on salt pond A13. All 6 birds had distinctly stout bills, as viewed in profile, compared to the bills of Red-necked Phaloropes I've seen earlier in the year. The upper parts (feathers) were generally a uniform light grey with no particular contrasting edging or patterns noticed in my views. I did see a few small dark splotches, a few dark feathers as previously mentioned in M.R.'s analysis/post.
